The Aspen International Mountain Foundation is excited to announce that leaders from United Nations and mountain nations from across the globe, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis, will gather online on April 28 to kick off 2022 as the UN International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.

Polis will be joined at the event by fellow Coloradan Luis Benitez, Vice President of Government Affairs and Global Impact at the VF Corporation, a Denver-based firm that manufactures outdoor wear under a number of different brands including The North Face, Timberland and Smartwool.

The April 28 online event sets in motion several months of programs designed to highlight and ultimately improve the lives of mountain peoples around the world and protect the mountain environments that many billions of people depend on for water, food and climate resiliency.

Gov. Polis is expected to announce that the state of Colorado, the Aspen International Mountain Foundation, the city of Aspen and the Aspen Institute will be hosting the sixth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership from Sept. 26-29. Held every four years, the Global Meeting brings together delegates from diverse mountainous countries around the world to set the organization’s agenda for the coming years.

The April 28 event is hosted by the Mountain Partnership, a voluntary United Nations alliance with 450 members, including governments, intergovernmental organizations, private sector, NGOs, universities and research institutes from around the world. The Rome-based Mountain Partnership works to raise awareness on the role of mountain environments and mountain people for the planet and help mountain communities achieve sustainable development goals.

Other speakers on April 28 include:

  • Roberto Natali, Plenipotentiary Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy and Chair of the Mountain Partnership Steering Committee;
  • QU Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations;
  • Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maldives;
  • Sadyr Japarov, President of the Kyrgyz Republic;
  • Yannick Glemarec, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund.

Ministers from Andorra, Bhutan, Dominican Republic, Nepal, Uganda will also join the event.

The event is being hosted online from Rome at 3:30 Central European Standard Time, which is 7:30 a.m. in Colorado.
